AN URBAN STRUGGLE

              This is a very critical stage.As a  9th semester students we were introduced to urban design.This word gives me a picture of few buildings and road systems only .Just that.!The site which was given to us is medical college precinct.For me that area was completely unfamiliar. Have just seen the arch in the front.
After two days of confusion, i decided to visit the site. It was pretty sure that it is impossible for me to start anything without visiting the site. My hope was that something from the site would initiate my thoughts.Since it was the first time i visit the site,i thought photos would help for restoring the memories. I took my camera .Put it in action. Hereby i attach some of those..!!

By 9:30 ,we reached there.It was pretty chaotic in that early hours. The surprising fact was the transport bus service inside the precinct.The best way to explain the experience is by describing things.The gateway leads to the road connecting each block in the precinct.

        Honking of vehicles,people in queues,ambulance,tired faced patients ....these are few things which i was welcomed to.For me i was a static object staring at high speed moving objects.It took a while to comprehend the movements.I cursed myself to bring a camera. False image of people frowning up came up.Any way i tried to catch only the concrete souls!!

The junction ahead the gateway always jammed.A few trees tries hard to make a green presence.As soon as we enter the gateway we met the next bottleneck.It seems like the tarred road plunges the heart of the building unintentionally.Then it straight leads to circle with a statue of mother and child.From there i noticed a gradual decrease in the density of people.End of the road lead to the college campus passing SAT and RCC. Element of green was much better there.Trees in its full lush.Dirty wall of the buildings echoes the miseries and anxiety of hundreds.I like to see it as signature of every government hospitals in Kerala.Clean and green environment anyway heals patients.

         Statue in front of the campus gave me a spark.(fig 1) Rather than a terminal end of movement, loop circulation is better.Smooth movement of people and vehicles is a big must inside the medical college. In 20 years anyway population and vehicle density rises up.Relocating of the medical college to another site do not bring any good in my view.Over the years medical college became a destination from all over Kerala. Most of all activities around medical college depended on hospital. From my view,rearranging and redesigning the parts gives us a better option for the next 20 years.Design for the need.!!
